Job Summary:

The Art Teacher will fulfill the mission of NHCA by planning, guiding, and evaluating the learning process of students in PK-6th grade. They will be responsible for developing in each student an interest in and the ability for creative expression in visual terms, using skills and techniques of artistic expression consistent with school guidelines; developing aesthetic understandings and appreciations; and discovering and developing talents of students in the field of art.

  • Plan and prepare a program of study to meet the needs and interests of the students through age-appropriate instructional strategies
  • Inform students about cultural and historical influences on art while encouraging students to express their own personalities and thoughts through the creative process
  • Teach knowledge and skills in art, including drawing, painting, lettering, art history, and three-dimensional art, and other appropriate learning activities
  • Provide instruction by which students develop aesthetic concepts and appreciations and the ability to make qualitative judgments about art
  • Demonstrate techniques in activities such as drawing, painting, and modeling, using standard and teacher-prepared instructional aids
  • Provide individual and small-group instruction to adapt the curriculum to the needs of students with varying intellectual and artistic abilities, and to accommodate a variety of instructional activities
  • Evaluate each student’s performance and growth in knowledge and aesthetic understandings, and prepare progress reports
  • Create a classroom environment that is conducive to learning and is age-appropriate
  • Set and maintain acceptable standards of classroom behavior to establish an orderly learning environment
  • Establish and maintain standards of student behavior needed to provide an orderly and productive student environment
  • Instruct students in proper care and use of tools and equipment
  • Communicates with parents regarding academic, behavioral, or safety concerns
  • Demonstrates professionalism in conduct, demeanor, and work habits
  • Collaborates with peers to enhance the work environment and support instructional planning
  • Meets staff development guidelines as set forth by administration
  • Select instructional materials, tools, instructional aids, and maintain required inventory records annually
  • Organize storage areas and control use of materials, equipment and tools to prevent loss or abuse, and to minimize time required for distribution and collection
  • Plan and present art displays and exhibitions designed to exhibit students’ work for the school and the community
  • Participate in curriculum and other developmental programs, such as after school art club
  • Be actively involved in showcases and participate in school-wide programs and events by planning and presenting art displays
  • Spearhead and organize the school yearbook
  • May sponsor exhibits from outside the school with administrator’s approval
  • Perform any other duties as may be assigned by Administration

Minimum Qualifications:

Education/Certification:

  • Degree in art education or a degree in art with a teacher certification
  • Artistic skills including oil painting, watercolor, clay, charcoal; creativity; organizational and time-management skills
  • Practical experience preferred

Physical Requirements and Working Environment

  • Physical Demands: Requires sedentary work involving standing or walking for brief periods, exerting up to 10 pounds of force on a regular basis; and some dexterity in operating office equipment.
  • The position requires normal visual acuity and field of vision, hearing and speaking abilities.
