Vision:

The Behavioral Specialist is highly aligned with the larger school vision and mission and actively assists in the prevention and intervention of disruptive and at-risk behavior of students by facilitating behavioral services to students, families and educational staff. The behavioral specialist is responsible for coordinating diagnostic, education and therapeutic services; assisting teachers with classroom management skills; providing on-going, crisis counseling, and assistance; maintaining records and reports as required and performing related professional and administrative work as assigned. S(he) manages procedures and supervises student behavior during transitions, lunch, assemblies, non-instructional activities, and while the teacher(s) deliver instruction.

Position Summary:
  • Hold students accountable for high expectations of behavior and engagement that are ambitious and measurable.
  • Plans for the diagnostic, educational, and therapeutic service needs of students with emotional/behavior disabilities.
  • Works closely with the school social worker to provide services and treatment for children with behavioral/mental health issues.
  • Collaborates with specialists in other areas to provide comprehensive assistance to teachers and staff members.
  • Exhibit team-mentality to ensure teachers, students, and parents are supported.
  • Contributes to the school culture with respect to the school mission and vision.
Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Design, implement, monitor and follow up on behavioral intervention/prevention strategies.
  • Assist with professional development to teachers for students with emotional/behavioral. disabilities in order to strengthen classroom management ability, including but not limited to teaching positive behavior support and verbal de-escalation skills, providing education in mental health issues and medical management issues.
  • Observes and reports to the Director of Culture on use of Kickboard and classroom management strategies of teachers and appropriateness of activities provided to ensure the provision of a safe and emotionally supportive environment.
  • Observes students within the parameters of the classroom/school environment that have received referrals due to disruptive or unusual behavior.
  • Suggests environmental changes for teachers to institute and implements interventions for students as needed.
  • Responds to crisis and admin call situations in a safe and caring manner.
  • Performs other duties that support the mission and vision of the school as assigned or directed.Gathers information/data to support periodic and special reports documenting activities for areas of responsibility.
  • Helps maintain student behavior during transitions and less structured times (e.g., lunch, hallways, restroom breaks, assemblies).

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
  • Ability to work within a structured academic setting.
  • Strong belief in the importance of working as a team to accomplish school goals.
  • Eager to be coached and open to adapting teaching practices to fit the specific needs of Grizzlies Prep students.
  • Desire to teach middle school-aged boys and ability to adapt to their developmental status.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills with an ability to maintain professionalism and tact in high-stress situations.
  • Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail.
Education and Experience:
  • At least two years of experience working with middle-schooled aged students.
  • Must be physically and mentally able to perform the responsibilities and duties of the position.
Physical Requirements:
  • Prolonged periods standing and actively monitoring student behavior while teaching.
  • Must be able to lift up to 15 pounds at times.
  • Must be able to assist students who have physical impairments.
  • Must be able to traverse classroom and adjust height, by bending or leaning, in order to teach each child.
  • Must be able to facilitate classroom transitions by walking through hallways and up and down stairs with students.
  • Prolonged periods sitting and working on computer to complete necessary paperwork.
