Summary
The Learning Specialist is a full-time position that operates under the supervision of the Director of Counseling to provide support to students, faculty, and staff as academic needs arise. The Learning Specialist works individually with students and provides guidance and expertise to faculty, developing academic plans that promote success in and out of the classroom.
Essential Functions
- Meet regularly with all students in assigned caseload
- Serve as counselee’s first point of contact for academic counseling needs
- Monitor the academic progress of all counselees
- Respond to student and parent requests for support
- Work collaboratively with teachers, staff, and administration to assist with student/teacher concerns
- Assist students in accessing academic support resources and provide skill training to support academic and personal achievement
- Maintain student counselee files
- Assist teachers in the identification and response to students with academic needs by offering resources, assistance, and training to enable faculty to better meet the needs of all learners.
- Provide standardized test interpretation to students and parents
- Coordinate student, parent, and teacher presentations to provide guidance on strategies for promoting student success/learning strategies
- Assist in the academic planning and scheduling of students
- Assist in creating individual student learning profiles that target the students’ specific curricular learning needs
- Regularly review and update student academic plans and student transcripts
- Facilitate and encourage student self-advocacy, skill development, and achievement of personal and academic goals
- Act as a liaison to local school district and attend SPED support meetings as needed
- Provide direct support for freshman and sophomore English classes by serving as Directed Studies instructor for students with learning differences

- Proficiency in using psychoeducational evaluations, teacher ratings, and student and parent reports to formulate educational planning
- Familiarity with role of independent schools in implementing recommended accommodations

- Proficiency in verbal and written communications skills
- Persistence in meeting students’ needs and addressing challenges to build supportive, trusting relationships with student

Work Environment
This position operates under the counseling services within a professional school environment. This role involves regular contact with students and families and routine collaboration with faculty, parents, and other professionals.

Required Education and Experience
Bachelor’s degree in Special Education or related field. Master’s degree preferred
3+ years of experience preferred

Pay: $51,787.00 – $53,932.00 per year
