Director, HR (Full Time)

The Opportunity:

The Director of Human Resources is responsible for providing leadership in developing and executing human resources processes, procedures and policies in support of the overall business plan and strategic direction of JCS, specifically in the areas of employee relations, compensation, benefits, data management, compliance and payroll.

 

What You Will Do:

  • Partner with VP of Finance and Operations and leaders across the organization to determine department goals and objectives to support JCS’s strategic plan and anticipated growth, advising on key organizational management issues as appropriate

  • Work through HR team to establish and implement HR initiatives & communication efforts that effectively communicate and support organizational goals

  • Ensure compliance with Federal and State Law, through development and application of policy and procedure; provide direction for the development and implementation of personnel policies and procedures

  • Provide Employee Relations support throughout the organization, and ensure appropriate and timely resolution of all Employee Relations issues; address escalations as needed

  • Ensure alignment with educator recruitment and performance management strategies

  • Partner with Senior Leadership Team on leadership development and training strategy for managers; coaches and trains managers in collaboration with Executive Director as appropriate

  • Partner with payroll department to ensure efficiency, compliance & accuracy

  • Collaborate with Senior Leadership Team to develop and maintain compensation, merit and performance management systems for classified staff at both Support Office and school sites

  • Monitor turnover of certificated and classified staff at the Support Office and school sites; develops and implements strategies to retain JCS’s highest performers

  • Establish and maintain relationships with hiring managers and regional leaders to understand staffing needs, programs, benefits, management structure, and advancement policies; advise and guide managers and employees on staffing policies and procedures

  • Perform searches for qualified candidates according to relevant job criteria, using computer databases, networking, Internet recruiting resources, cold calls, social media, recruiting firms, and employee referrals

  • Review and evaluate applicant qualifications or eligibility for specified licensing, according to established guidelines and designated licensing codes

  • Evaluate recruitment and selection criteria to ensure adherence to professional, statistical, and testing standards, recommending revision as needed

  • Advise management on organizing, preparing, and implementing recruiting and retention programs

  • Manage and oversee the use and maintenance of the HRIS system by end users across the organization

  • Provide timely reports to management to assist on key Human Resource metrics

  • Provide data for regional audits

  • Manage workman’s compensation claims

  • Oversee credential management and compliance, including I-9, Backgrounds and TB and periodically audits for accuracy. Maintains all employee and applicant documentation as dictated by governing agencies.

  • Oversee the new hire process; Manage offer letters/new hire packets Manage new employee orientation; Coordinate new hire integration with all departments

  • Works with outside vendors and carriers in relations to Benefits/Payroll to ensure accuracy and maintain accurate data.

  • Maintain current knowledge and understanding of all applicable laws, industry trends and best practices

  • Demonstrate knowledge of, and support, Journey Community Schools mission, vision, value statements, standards, policies and procedures, operating instructions, confidentiality standards, and the code of ethical behavior

  • Perform other related duties as required and assigned

 

What You Will Bring:

Required knowledge, skills & abilities

  • A graduate degree, or related experience required

  • SPHR certification is preferred

  • Deep knowledge of principles and best practices of Federal and State employment law, compensation, organizational development, performance management

  • Excellent interpersonal skills, including ability to handle confidential and sensitive issues with diplomacy and even-handedness and ability to work effectively with teammates of all levels

  • Excellent communication skills with demonstrated ability to speak and write clearly and persuasively

  • Excellent organization, time management and follow-up skills; high sense of urgency; demonstrated ability to successfully handle multiple projects concurrently; ability to work independently

  • Ability to research complex problems and develop cost effective solutions; strong analytical skills and ability to make fact-based decisions

  • Ability to work with attorneys and other outside advisors to get relevant, accurate advice quickly

  • Proven leadership skills with the ability to attract, develop and inspire a team; exceptional ability to bridge and enhance cooperative working relationships

  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office, HRIS databases

  • Must be able to travel to multiple school sites

Minimum educational level:

  • Bachelor’s degree required

  • Graduate degree in business, HR or related field preferred

Experience required:

  • Minimum of 3 years of experience as head of a growing Human Resource department at the Director or VP level

  • Extensive experience in Employee Relations with a demonstrated record of resolving difficult issues

  • Experience developing department budgets & collaborating across departments at the Director or VP level

  • Experience managing payroll, including hands-on payroll processing

  • Experience or strong interest in K-8 public education
