Position Summary
The Special Education Teacher at Memphis Academy of Science and Engineering is responsible for providing individualized instruction and support to students with disabilities, ensuring compliance with IEPs, and promoting academic and behavioral success in a college-preparatory environment.
Key Responsibilities
- Instruction & Student Support
- Provide direct instruction to students with disabilities in inclusion and/or pull-out settings
- Adapt curriculum, assignments, and assessments to meet diverse learning needs
- Implement accommodations and modifications as outlined in Individualized Education Programs (IEPs)
- Monitor and document student progress toward IEP goals
IEP Development & Compliance
- Develop, review, and update IEPs in compliance with federal and Tennessee state regulations
- Conduct evaluations and participate in eligibility and IEP meetings
- Maintain accurate documentation and ensure legal compliance with special education laws
Collaboration
- Co-teach and collaborate with general education teachers to support inclusion
- Communicate regularly with parents/guardians regarding student progress
- Work with administrators, counselors, and support staff to address academic and behavioral needs
Classroom & Behavior Management
- Establish a structured, supportive, and inclusive classroom environment
- Implement behavior intervention plans (BIPs) when needed
- Support students’ social-emotional development
Data & Reporting
- Use assessment data to drive instruction and interventions
- Track student performance, attendance, and behavior
- Prepare reports for school leadership and compliance purposes
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Special Education or related field (Master’s preferred)
- Valid Tennessee Teaching License with Special Education endorsement
- Knowledge of IEP development and special education law (IDEA)
- Strong classroom management and communication skills
- Ability to work collaboratively in a team-oriented environment

- Charter school setting serving middle and/or high school students
- Emphasis on academic rigor, STEM focus, and student achievement
- Teachers may be expected to participate in school events and extracurricular activities
