SUMMARY DESCRIPTION
The Special Assistant to the Superintendent plays an integral role in the effectiveness of the superintendent and must be prepared to excel under pressure while balancing multiple projects and requests. The most successful candidates embrace the opportunity to serve the superintendent as:

  • A high-energy, agile leader who serves at the pleasure of the Superintendent of Memphis-Shelby County Schools.
  • A key executive staff member responsible for coordinating and assisting with department initiatives and special projects, including coordinating and overseeing superintendent’s approval, incoming communications on behalf of the superintendent, and planning of various departmental meetings and events.
  • A trusted advisor who works closely with senior leaders and across all departments to ensure coordination, collaboration, and effectiveness.
  • A visionary team player with advanced organizational and communication skills and notable success working with high level executives.
  • A responsive, intuitive senior level administrator with a sharp grasp of prioritizing tasks, requests, and the professional demands of effectively managing the superintendent’s office.

Essential Job Functions

  1. Represents the Superintendent and is the liaison between the Superintendent’s office and a variety of other internal and external offices. Accompanies the Superintendent at designated meetings and events at the discretion of the
  2. Prepares agendas, briefing documents, testimonials, and additional preparatory materials in collaboration with key staff members for the Superintendent.
  3. Works in a cooperative and collaborative manner with numerous internal and external constituents. Assists with developing, supporting, communicating, aligning, calibrating, and maintaining the highest quality educational programs and services in the
  4. Develops and continuously enhances strategies for effective communications regarding district policies, goals, objectives and program and service innovations to district staff and the general community.
  5. Provides communication counsel and support to the Superintendent to ensure the district’s strategy, objectives, and performance are concisely communicated to external and internal Drafts and reviews numerous internal and external correspondence for the Superintendent.
  6. Supervises the workflow of the Superintendent’s office to ensure quality and timeliness including reports, position papers, correspondence, and related items.
  7. Oversees direct reports as assigned by the Superintendent to ensure efficiency and effectiveness of the Office of the Superintendent.
  8. Performs all other duties and special projects assigned by the Superintendent of Schools.

Minimum Qualifications

Graduation from an accredited college or university with a bachelor’s degree in business administration, Education, Public Administration, or a related field; PLUS seven (7) years of experience in a related field; OR equivalent combination or related education and experience totaling eleven (11) years. PROOF OF EDUCATION, TRAINING, AND/OR EXPERIENCE IS REQUIRED

Degree Equivalency Formula:

Bachelor’s Degree= 4 years plus required years of experience.

Master’s Degree=6 years plus required years of experience.
