IZone Algebra II Instructional Coach

Purpose and Scope
The Instructional Coach coaches and supports teachers through observations, feedback, and analysis of student results, demonstration lessons, curriculum implementation, team teaching and instructional best practices. Provides expert support to build capacity within school instructional teams on research based strategies, develop strategies to solve complex problems, monitor and assess school performance data, and ensure adherence to district curriculum implementation.

Essential Job Functions

  • Coaches and supports teachers through observations, feedback, and analysis of student results, demonstration lessons, curriculum implementation, team teaching and instructional best practices.
  • Shares effective instructional strategies with teachers both individually and through in-service workshops; assist with lesson planning and delivery of instruction, observes teachers in the classroom; makes recommendations for improvement in performance as appropriate; offers advice and assistance as needed.
  • Reviews assessment data and assists with development of long-term math plans for assigned schools.
  • Works collaboratively with grade level teams, teacher leaders, or curriculum focus group sessions.
  • Communicates instructional best practices with school leadership to provide maximum teacher effectiveness.
  • Provides leadership in developing, monitoring and implementing appropriate curriculum to meet the identified needs of the system. This requires a high degree of ingenuity, creativity, resourcefulness, and competency in maintaining standards of excellence in curriculum & instruction; is viewed as expert within the field.
  • Serves as an instructional teacher leader in the assigned curricular area, developing and implementing appropriate curriculum and meeting identified needs to address the rigor or the Common Core State Standards.
  • Designs and disseminates instructional strategies that enhance instruction in the assigned curricular area.
  • Provides assistance to all professional school-based personnel and/or community representatives regarding the assigned curricular area and works collaboratively with other professionals, and management in the development of effective instructional and assessment technique which are research based and achieve a system-wide result. May lead a team in the effort.
  • Serves as liaison between the Department of Curriculum and Instruction and teachers and principals on 9-12 math curriculum and instructional matters and makes recommendations pertaining thereto.
  • Assists the Department of Professional Development and Regional Academic Office by planning and conducting content specific professional growth activities.
  • Assists with on-going orientation of new teachers in the areas of Secondary Math curriculum and instruction.
  • Assists teachers as needed or requested in the development of effective content specific curriculum implementation and instructional and assessment techniques.
  • Researches, provides and assists teachers as needed or requested in the development of effective instructional and assessment techniques which are research based in order to increase student mastery of state standards; advances teachers’ knowledge of state and district content standards and understanding including teaching strategies, assessments, District and school data driven instruction and lesson demonstrations and pre and post analysis.
  • Deals with unusually complex problems and provides solutions that are highly innovative and ingenious, achieving quality and work process improvements. Ensures that the work group’s goals and activities are in sync with and support the broader goals and objectives of the organization; and that the execution of responsibilities is in accordance to lawful and ethical standards.
  • Assists the Department of Curriculum and Instruction in disaggregating student data, identifying student needs, selecting textbooks and materials, and establishing program goals.
  • Directs the preparation and maintenance of a variety of narrative and statistical reports, records, correspondence, and files related to assigned service, activities, and operations; provides for appropriate research and compiles reports, as needed.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned or directed.

Minimum Qualifications
Graduate from an accredited college or university with a Master’s Degree in Education, Curriculum and Instruction or a closely related field plus a minimum of five (5) years of experience related to the area of assignment. Valid State of Tennessee teacher certification required. An endorsement in the content area directly related to area of assignment, evidence of ongoing professional learning, and professional development facilitation and a minimum of two (2) years coaching experience preferred (PROOF OF EDUCATION, TRAINING, AND/OR EXPERIENCE IS REQUIRED).

  • Skill in developing data-supported solutions and using fact-based logic; ability to translate complex analysis in an easy-to-understand manner and present to a broad audience
  • Expertise in tests and measurement, especially norm-referenced and criterion-referenced student assessments
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Outstanding leadership skills and ability to build high-performing teams through both recruitment and selection and professional development
  • Ability to tackle the operational challenges of a large urban school district in a complex, changing political and educational environment
  • Ability to manage daily administrative tasks without losing sight of long-term goals and planning.

Physical Requirements and Working Environment
Physical Demands: Requires sedentary work involving standing or walking for brief periods, exerting up to 10 pounds of force on a regular basis; and some dexterity in operating office equipment; must be able to use hands and fingers for sign language.

Unavoidable Hazards:  The position is exposed to no unusual environmental hazards.

Sensory (ADA) Requirements: The position requires normal visual acuity and field of vision, hearing and speaking abilities.
