PURPOSE AND SCOPE:

The Elementary School Principal will coordinate administrative oversight and plan all phases of instructional leadership for the school including educational programming, administration, discipline, and counseling services.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

  1. Principal shall use best professional efforts and skills to perform duties in a diligent, energetic, competent, and ethical manner, consistent with the School’s established policies, directives, and expected practices. 
  2. You understand and accept that the values of Southern Avenue Charter, temperance and tolerance apply to your interactions with your supervisors, colleagues, students, parents, staff, and all others with whom you come in contact at or on behalf of the School.
  3. Provides executive-level leadership in planning, organizing, and directing all programs and activities associated with the development and management of district wide Pre-K-12 curriculum and programs of instruction. Directs and coordinates activities related to the district’s instructional delivery system and program management cycle.
  4. Provides overall leadership and appropriate resources for on-going district-wide curriculum development and review to ensure articulation of objectives and skills continuum Pre-K through grade 5.
  5. Assists teachers and school administrators in meeting expectations identified with assisting teachers and school administrators in meeting identified goals in instruction and maintains on-going communication with teachers and school leadership as appropriate.
  6. Collaborates with regional academic leadership in the development and organization of professional development.
  7. Provides resources and assists teachers with materials, tools, information, etc. to support classroom instruction.
  8. Liaisons between research and practice, helping teachers learn to improve their practices in a reflective supportive setting.
  9. Initiates the development of programmatic goals and instructional objectives on a district-wide basis within the scope of district policy, administrative direction, assessed student needs, and operational constraints. Uses student achievement data for ongoing curriculum review and progress versus district goals.  
  10. Manages K-2 teachers / school / region content support across all subject areas and grades. Provides leadership in the reviewing and evaluating processes related to selection of instructional materials.
  11. Manages shift to TN State Standards over time.
  12. Works collaboratively with the Chiefs, Executive Directors, and other Directors to formulate targets and goals for productivity, cost management, quality, and providing input on system-wide policy development as it relates to Curriculum & Instruction.
  13. Supervises staff establishing standards and effectively select, train, motivate, delegate, monitor and evaluate performance to ensure targets and goals are met.  Facilitates professional development and serves as coach and mentor.  
  14. Executes responsibilities according to lawful and ethical standards. Uses personal judgment and initiative to develop effective and constructive solutions to challenges and obstacles.
  15. Oversees the daily management of the instructional program and the school office.
  16. Oversees educators in the school, providing periodic observations and evaluations that are timely and constructive and completed based on the timetables set by the school district.
  17. Offers additional training and guidance as necessary based on evaluations of professional staff.
  18. Ensures a productive learning environment through continual collaboration with teachers, students, and parents.
  19. Facilitates opportunities to connect with students by being present and available during arrival and dismissal, by appearing at school functions, and by meeting with students.
  20. Enforces disciplinary policies and procedures with students.
  21. Participates in parent meetings and conferences and acts as intermediary between parents, teachers, and students to deal with a variety of needs or issues.
  22. Maintains competency and student academic achievement as prescribed by the school board.
  23. Presides over staff meetings.
  24. Ensures completion of routine and required paperwork including attendance reports, test results, and licensing information for students, educators, staff, and school management.
  25. Coordinates staff development for faculty and staff; provides instruction if needed.
  26. Represents the school in community activities and meetings.
  27. Interacts with various stakeholders to foster a positive relationship between the school and community including the PTO, community organizations, and leaders.
  28. Acts as liaison between the district and the school; communicates needs and information to both sides.
  29. Collaborates with other principals and educators throughout the district to choose and develop curriculum and textbooks that align with local, state, and national standards.
  30. Implements and creates a positive culture and climate for SACS employees, students, and stakeholders.
  31. Develops a plan to ensure “All students are learning, because all teachers are teaching, while educating the whole child.”
  32. TEAM evaluation and schedule evaluations.
  33. Familiar with elementary standards, best instructional practices, classroom management; conducts ongoing classroom observations.
  34. Facilitates and manages schoolwide, district, and federal educational policies.
  35. Coordinate the SACS Emergency Management team.
  36. Effectively communicates schoolwide procedures.
  37. Leads the school overall gains on TCAP for 2024-2025 school year and beyond.
  38. Ensures that discipline guidelines are followed.
  39. Works cohesively with the Central Office and Board of Directors to ensure SACS continues to reach its mission.
  40. Review progress in quarterly report cards.
  41. Plans, organizes, implements staff, professional development programs.
  42. Seeks to maintain that SACS is conducive to good teacher to teacher and teacher to administrator relationships.
  43. Plans, evaluates, and recommends schoolwide programs, policies, goals and objectives.
  44. Analyzes and makes recommendations related to school achievement data.
  45. Assists in the selection and supervises the distribution, storage and inventory of all textbooks, instructional materials and supplies for building operations.
  46. Develops and coordinates a schoolmaster schedule that meets students’ needs and adheres to MSCS guidelines.
  47. Receives and responds to inquiries, concerns, and complaints from students, and parents; maintain effective relationships with students and parents’ works to resolve administrative, instructional and behavioral issues.
  48. Coordinates and participates in the process of recommending students for support programs as needed.
  49. Weekly meetings with executive administrator or executive team to establish current objections.
  50. Manages academic interventions for under-achieving or special needs students (not covered by other departments)
  51. Performs other related duties as assigned or directed.

Qualifications

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Master’s degree in Educational Leadership, Administration, or related field (required).
  • Valid school administrator certification/license (as required by the state law).
  • Minimum of 3-5 years of teaching experience, preferably at the elementary level.
  • Prior leadership or administrative experience in a school setting (preferred).
  • Demonstrated knowledge of curriculum design, instructional strategies, and assessment practices.
  • Strong personal, organizational, and communication skills.
  • Ability to lead with vision, empathy, and accountability.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES

  • Basic knowledge of child growth and development, instructional procedures and practices applicable to assignment, instructional goals and policies of Southern Avenue Charter School.
  • Knowledge of subject matter reinforcement practices of the classes to which assigned
  • Ability to implement teachers’ instructional plans in assigned field
  • Foster a safe, respectful, and inclusive school culture for students, staff, and families
  • Collaborate with district leaders on curriculum development, standardized testing, and data-driven decision making.
  • Ability to work effectively with children, young adults, and faculty members;
  • Ability to assist with the implementation of an instructional program and to participate in monitoring and ensuring appropriate student behavior
  • Ability to follow written and oral instructions and to perform all required task
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.
