Position Summary:

The Special Education Teacher is passionate about supporting the students with disabilities who are at-risk for academic or social-emotional underperformance so that they can succeed in Grizzlies Prep’s rigorous academic program. The Special Education Teacher holds primary responsibility for providing academic and social emotional development services for students who require additional support to thrive within the school’s core academic program.

Supervisory Responsibilities: Supervises the behavior of all students in the classroom, throughout school grounds, and on educational trips using Grizzlies Prep’s behavior management systems and procedures.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Develops and revises IEPs for each student by collaborating with school staff, families, and other relevant parties, setting learning goals and implementing accommodations and modifications as necessary and required by state and federal law; ensures each student’s tasks and lessons are planned and executed according to his abilities and goals.
  • Implements IEPs, monitors progress towards goals, and collaborates with relevant teachers to ensure each student’s needs are met and plans are followed.
  • Develops and teaches lessons that provide engaging learning opportunities for small groups and individual students while meeting required specifications of IEPs and 504 plans.
  • Develops, completes, and maintains all paperwork mandated by local, state, and federal guidelines, laws, and regulations.
  • Maintains knowledge of special education teaching methods, research, and best practices through professional development and study.
  • Adheres to Grizzlies Prep’s employment and school policies.
  • Utilizes Grizzlies Prep systems for behavior management, grade entry, attendance, and other essential data tracking functions
  • Provides timely, meaningful feedback to students in order to remedy academic deficiencies.
  • Builds and maintains positive relationships with parents through various means of communication, including phone calls, emails, texts, and in-person meetings.
  • Discusses academic difficulties and behavioral concerns with students and parents as they arise.
  • Communicates all progress and concerns with tact and professionalism to parents and, as appropriate, other faculty, staff, and/or head of school.
  • Enforces safety and security standards for students, staff, and visitors.
  • Monitors halls, student transitions, study periods, and lunchrooms with other faculty and staff as needed by adhering to Grizzlies Prep policies.
  • Participates in faculty meetings, educational conferences, in-service opportunities, workshops, and other training seminars.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Thorough understanding of best practices regarding legally compliant completion of IEP, Reevaluation, and Eligibility paperwork and facilitation of associated meetings.
  • Thorough understanding of policies, laws, and guidelines related to special education.
  • Ability to work within a structured academic setting.
  • Strong belief in the importance of working as a team to accomplish school goals.
  • Eager to be coached and open to adapting teaching practices to fit the specific needs of Grizzlies Prep students.
  • Desire to teach middle school-aged boys and ability to adapt to their developmental status.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills with an ability to maintain professionalism and tact in high-stress situations.
  • Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail.

Education and Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree required; Master’s degree preferred.
  • Active Tennessee teaching license with special education certification.
  • Must be physically and mentally able to perform the responsibilities and duties of the position.

Physical Requirements:

  • Prolonged periods standing and actively monitoring student behavior while teaching.
  • Must be able to lift up to 15 pounds at times.
  • Must be able to assist students who have physical impairments.
  • Must be able to traverse classroom and adjust height, by bending or leaning, in order to teach each child.
  • Must be able to facilitate classroom transitions by walking through hallways and up and down stairs with students.
  • Prolonged periods sitting and working on computer to complete necessary paperwork.
