Position Description: The Family Coach is a member of the Family Engagement Team, providing high-quality school/family interactions for the Elementary School and Preschool. The Family Coach will report to the Senior Director of Family Engagement. In other key partnerships, the Family Coach will interact and develop relationships with families, staff, community partners, and volunteers. A servant leader, the Family Coach, will do whatever is needed to ensure SoP’s success.

The Family Coach position has been created in response to the needs of families currently enrolled with SoP, holistically offering resources and support for all family members. The primary role of a Family Coach is to empower the families we serve by partnering with them to achieve their desired goals for their family and child(ren). The Family Coach will serve as this connection piece by developing relationships with families, addressing immediate and long-term needs, and supporting families on their pathway to success.

Essential Job Functions include but are not limited to:

  • Develop and maintain trusting relationships with families through calls and in-person meetings/home visits consistently and regularly.
  • Assist families in accessing various resources to promote stability (Ex. Applying for assistance from DHS, identifying local food pantries, and finding information on upcoming community events and resources.
  • Help family members identify personal empowerment goals (Ex. Earning their GED, moving into their own home, solidifying stable employment, etc.), create a plan to reach goals, and in collaboration with families, create a plan to achieve personal goals.
  • Maintain accurate record-keeping to track, analyze, and monitor family interactions. Data must be entered in a timely and precise manner.
  • Work with staff members to access further support for families through data tracking, completing referrals, identifying needed referral services, reviewing applications for missing health requirements, completing reports, etc.
  • Work with family members to identify specific barriers to child(s)’ attendance and academic success; partner with family members to create plans of action to overcome barriers (Ex. create attendance letters, conduct home visits, provide attendance calendars, implement family support plans, and complete transition plans).
  • Work with teachers and clinicians to monitor and identify child behavioral patterns or activities that suggest environmental concerns; create plan(s) of action to address concerns.
  • Support families with completing health requirements (Ex. identifying medical and dental homes,
  • sharing vision resources, assisting families in completing well-child visits and dental exams, etc.)
  • Develop strategies to recruit families for the Family Advisory Board (F.A.B). Ensure that your families attend parenting events and conferences.
  • Organize and develop monthly parent education workshops (such as Financial Literacy, Kindergarten Readiness, and GED Prep) for Families based on the needs identified.

While this description summarizes the core functions of the Family Coach, other duties may be assigned based on the schools’ needs.

Qualifications and Competencies:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in human services or a comparable field required
  • Minimum 2 years of experience in human services-related field
  • Reliable transportation
  • Commitment to and incorporation of the mission and vision of Schools of Perea into behavior and attitudes
  • Proven experience in cultural competency to understand, communicate with, and effectively interact with people across cultures
  • Flexibility and resilience to thrive in a complex and changing environment while handling setbacks and failures professionally with the goal of effectively responding to any adversity
  • Ability to multitask, maintain oversight of multiple projects simultaneously, carry projects through to successful completion, provide timely updates, and meet given deadlines
  • Desire to ensure excellence in all projects
  • Effective communication skills in all formats with varied audiences
  • Knowledge of the complex helping systems, professions, and organizations available in the Memphis area with experience in both how they affect children and family welfare and in how they can be used to deliver services
  • Knowledge and experience in safety regulations, practices, and procedures
  • Ability to work well with others while exhibiting empathy and compassion to empower them
