ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
The learning specialist is responsible for providing support to students with learning differences and
delays. This position works closely with students, faculty, school counselors, administration, and families.

Primary responsibilities include the following:

  • Work directly with identified students in K-8th grade
  • Partner proactively with faculty and administration to support students with varying learning styles and with teachers in their efforts to advance students with varying learning needs
  • Participate in classroom instruction and collaborate with teachers as needed
  • Direct one-on-one and/or small-group instruction
  • Develop learning goals and specific objectives in response to identified needs
  • Provide regular written student progress reports to the school and families
  • Maintain confidential student records and keep accurate documentation of sessions, meetings, and formative assessments
  • Attend parent conferences as needed
  • Recommend in-school and community resources for identified students
  • Work with professionals outside the school to support students
  • Participate in committee, department, and staff meetings as well as school-sponsored events that would benefit from expertise
  • Be involved in the school community at large, which may include chapel and after-school activities
  • Other duties and projects as assigned

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor’s degree
  • Advanced degree preferred (for example, Certified Academic Language Therapist or similar degree/training)
  • 3+ years of teaching experience
  • Knowledge of learning disabilities, psycho-educational tests, reports, and assistive technology
  • Certification and/or additional training in literacy-based supports
  • Proven success as a leader in program development
  • Full understanding of differentiated instructional strategies across the curriculum
  • Able to demonstrate student growth and measure student response to intervention
  • Outstanding interpersonal and organizational skills
  • Exceptional written and oral communication skills
  • Strong networking skills to ensure access to resources in the broader community

REPORTS TO: Head of Lower School & Head of Middle School
WORK HOURS: M-F, 7:45 a.m. – 4 p.m., weekends & evenings as needed
