Freedom Prep Academy Charter Schools, a Memphis-based network, prepare all students in grades Pre-K through 12 to excel in college and in life. Freedom Preparatory Academy opened in August of 2009 with a class of 96 6th graders. We now serve over 2400 students in grades PreK-12. Our students have exceeded local and state averages in math and local averages in English language arts on the state exam.

POSITION OVERVIEW

The Behavior Interventionist position supports Freedom Prep’s Flagship Middle School in the prevention and intervention of disruptive and at-risk behavior of students by providing behavioral international support services to students, families and educational staff, and ensuring the execution of a trauma-informed discipline response and behavior management system school wide. This position is also responsible for coordinating student activity and monitoring the completion/progress of classroom assignments. The Behavior Interventionist will report to the Head of School.

 

The Behavior Interventionist will champion our school’s expectations and belief that all of our students will be prepared for success in college and in life, as a result of our rigorous academic program and support. Their vision and expectations are rooted in deeply held values of equity, especially for our predominantly low-income, first-generation college-going, student of color population.

 

RESPONSIBILITIES

Coordinate and oversee instructional activities and behavioral support for students assigned to In-School Suspension (ISS)
Coordinate assignments and activities with classroom teachers of students who received behavioral referral; provides tutorial assistance as needed and monitors student’s class work while in ISS or in the classroom
Plan for the diagnostic, educational and therapeutic service needs of students with emotional/behavior disabilities
Design, implement, monitor and follow-up on behavioral intervention/prevention strategies
Identify and maintain cooperative working relationships with resources and agencies providing services and treatment for children with behavioral/mental health issues
Provide professional development and assistance to teachers of students with emotional/behavioral disabilities in order to strengthen classroom management ability, including but not limited to:
teaching positive behavior support and verbal de-escalation skills
providing education in mental health issues and medical management issues
collaborating with specialists in other areas to provide comprehensive assistance to teachers and staff members
Observe and report on classroom management style of teachers to ensure provision of a safe and emotionally supportive environment
Facilitate and lead planning meetings with teachers, social workers and clinicians as needed
Observe students within the parameters of the classroom/school environment that have been referred because of disruptive or unusual behavior, suggest environmental changes for teachers to institute, and implement interventions for students as needed
Respond to crisis situations in a safe and caring manner.
Gather information/data to support periodic and special reports documenting behavior management responses
Attend professional classes, workshops or conferences to improve professional skills and maintain certifications, as required
Maintain the school culture of high academic and behavioral expectations through continuous reflection
Maintain accurate, complete and correct records as required by law, and district and administrative regulations
Work an extended school day to allow for collaboration, professional development, and ample communication with parents and other staff members
Performs other related duties as assigned or directed

 

QUALIFICATIONS

Bachelor’s degree required from accredited college or university; Master’s Degree preferred
Considered highly-qualified based on NCLB guidelines
At least two years of relevant experience in urban education or a similar environment
Ability to establish rapport with families and students and passion for working with underserved student populations and their families
Strong written and verbal communication skills, strong follow-through, and the ability to work effectively with internal and external audiences and across diverse stakeholders
Professional demeanor and excellent judgment in decision-making that drive towards the mission of Freedom Prep, specifically for students with disabilities or differences
Independent self-starter with a strong focus on student development and success
Strong organizational and planning skills, attention to detail, and ability to work both on broad-based strategy and everyday details
Passionate and loving attitude toward all children
Belief in inquiry-based learning and constructivist methods
Demonstrated commitment to the vision, mission, and core values of Freedom Preparatory Academy
Motivation to grow as an educational professional
Desire to implement curriculum, instruction, and assessment that is cutting-edge based on educational research
Willingness to be an active member of a professional learning community focused on action research within the school and the classroom
